I should note that, especially at the college level, the standard deviation of these values can be very large. Economics and computer science professors get paid a ton more than English or History professors, as incentive to attract people who could make big bucks working in industry. Pay varies a lot from district to district in public schools as well. Here is a map of average public school teacher pay the US from 2008:

 

 

And here’s one from Massachusetts, to show how much k-12 teacher salaries vary even within the same state. Right now it’s showing high school teacher pay; click on the image to go to WBUR’s site and see the same spread for middle- or grade-school teachers.

That’s some pretty impressive discrepancy, even after you think about cost-of-living.
